Both the ZF (XK8) and the Mercedes (XKR) automatic gearboxes are supposed to be ‘sealed for life’ units with no need to service the gearbox. These gearboxes are no exception to the fact that the oil and therefore the filters will become contaminated with mileage and to preserve the life of the unit, they will benefit from an oil change at 50,000 and thereafter 30,000 mile intervals. In the past, servicing the autobox was prohibitive due to the cost of the special oil / filter required for the job.

The Jaguar S Type was launched in 1999 to great acclaim incorporating some of the traditional looks of the 1960’s MK2 and S Type Jaguar. However, the early S Types produced from 1999 to 2002 experienced a number of problems with the suspension and brake systems. These problems resulted in average handling and a tendency to prematurely wear out the lower ball joints. Until recently, this necessitated the purchase of a complete new suspension upright at significant cost (£375 per side). Now, in terms of S Type Parts availability both the upper and lower ball joints are available individually as aftermarket parts but they do need to be carefully fitted.

S Type Parts Front Suspension Issues 1999 to 2002

In 2002, the S Type front suspension layout was changed for the better being sub frame mounted as opposed to the earlier cars using two separate cross members. The new design incorporated a reversed lower ball joint and a two piece lower wishbone. These S Type parts were more robust and also much improved the handling of the car. However there are still some remaining problems with the system requiring the replacement of parts at fairly frequent intervals. These relate to the anti roll bar bushes of which there have been a number of revised designs but the problem has not been completely overcome. New springs and dampers in the 2002 and onwards cars have also vastly improved the handling of the car.

S Type Parts Front Suspension 2002 Onwards

The alloy upper and lower rear wishbones must for the time being be replaced as a complete assembly at a relatively high cost, with the bushes not being available separately as the time of writing this article.
